I still remember the day I saw that photograph — a father, out of frame except for his arms, cradling his newborn daughter. I was mesmerized. It was perfect in every way. I thought all day about the photo — its composition, the sense of tenderness it conveyed… I was a student at the time, with not a lot of pocket money. But I knew I had to recreate that shot one day. And I did, sixteen years later, with my daughter Aishah.
At its best, photos can be like magic. They open a portal to the past, breathe life into our innermost feelings, and make strangers seem like family. As a photographer, that’s exactly the kind of reaction I’m going for. I’ve travelled widely, documenting the colourful lives of people across diverse cultures. People are the same everywhere, and they are beautiful.
Especially if they’re dressed for the occasion! I’m passionate about documentary-style photography. In particular, I like doing event photography…
And even corporate events. Why? Because I think the concept of “event photography” has become stereotypical, and far too often misses the human aspect of moments that mean the most to us. My work has been featured in several international ceremonies and exhibitions, including the Beijing Olympics. A few years back, FeatureShoot.com covered a feature story about my photos of the Annual Bishwa Ijtema in Bangladesh. I’ve also worked as the official photographer for an international edition of “Who Wants to Be A Millionaire”, and have a growing, loyal clientele here in Sydney.
